Minimum Age Limit for Class 1 Admission in Kendriya Vidyalaya for the Academic Year 2022-23
Kendriya Vidyalaya Age Limit for Class 1 challenged in Delhi High Court by a frustrated parent
On an exciting last day of February when all the parents with their 5-year-olds dreamt of seeing their kids in the KV uniform, hogged on to the kvs website to register for class 1 admissions. Little did they know about the change in the guidelines that the government made, parents were frustrated to see that their 5-year-olds are not eligible for class 1.
It is a usual practice that Indian schools admit kids as they grow five years old. A sudden change in that rule wearied many parents off. There weren’t any warnings or public announcements outright by the government! Just a line in the official guidelines, that too so in the middle of a paragraph that anyone would just miss it. It might seem like a not big deal but imagine the parents’ difficulties who have been direly waiting for admissions in KV schools exclusively!
Parents have not just been disappointed but are furious about not informing the change beforehand. One among them has filed a petition in the Delhi High Court challenging the same.
5-year-olds are not allowed to be admitted and 6-year-olds would have already graduated their 1st grade and moved to the second grade. There are not many six-year-old kids who have been at home. Parents state that this decision is unfair! This decision will waste one year of a kid’s life and parents are conflicted on what to do with their children. This rule can be implemented from the next academic year so that parents can prepare themselves ahead.
The explanation for this unprecedented change is the National Education Policy 2020. The education system got a new makeover from 10+2 system to 5+3+3+4 system. For the first five years, three years of kindergarten and 1st and 2nd standard have to be completed. Therefore, the age limit for class 1 is shifted from 5 years to 6.
The solution to this problem could be, allowing both 5- and 6-year-olds to be eligible for admission this year alone. The rule can be implemented from the next academic session, i.e, 2023-24, so that parents are aware and prepared. This can also make all the other private schools, educational institutions apart from Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan follow the same uniformly.
